How Many Sweat Glands Does the Human Body Have?

The human body has roughly 2 to 4 million eccrine sweat glands, the small coiled glands responsible for most thermoregulatory sweating. They are spread across almost the entire skin surface, but not evenly: density is highest on the fingers, palms and soles and much lower on areas such as the upper lip. One detailed analysis estimated that a standardized adult (1.8 m2 of skin) carries about 2.0 million functional eccrine glands. How many sweat glands does the body have?

The commonly cited figure is that humans have about 2 to 4 million eccrine sweat glands distributed across nearly the whole body surface. Eccrine glands open directly onto the skin and produce the watery sweat used for temperature regulation; they are the type responsible for most of what people think of as sweating.

A 2013 synthesis of more than a century and a half of anatomical measurements put a sharper number on it: for a standardized individual with 1.8 m2 of skin, the body carries an estimated 2.03 million functional eccrine glands, with a 95% confidence interval of 1.72 to 2.34 million. That estimate sits at the lower end of the classic 2-4 million range, and it counts only glands that are actually secreting.

A second gland type, the apocrine glands, is far more limited. Rather than covering the whole body, apocrine glands are concentrated in specific areas such as the armpits, the groin and anogenital region, the areola, and the external ear canal, and they open into hair follicles rather than directly onto the skin. Because their distribution is restricted, apocrine glands make up only a small share of the body's total sweat glands.

Sweat gland density varies widely by body region

Glands are not spread evenly. A regional analysis found more than a thirty-fold difference between the most and least densely covered skin: density is highest on the fingers, palms and soles and lowest on areas such as the upper lip. The values below are representative regional means in glands per square centimetre.

Why palms and soles have the most glands

The palms and soles, along with the volar surfaces of the fingers, carry the densest concentration of eccrine glands. This is why the hands and feet can feel disproportionately sweaty even though they make up a small fraction of total skin area, and why palm and sole sweating is such a prominent feature of focal excessive sweating.

High gland density in one region does not automatically mean it produces the most total sweat during heat or exercise. Density and secretion rate are different measurements: the trunk and limbs, with lower density but far larger surface area, contribute a large share of whole-body sweat output during thermal load. Sweat rate per gland also varies by site and situation, so a dense region is not always the wettest one.

What these numbers do and don't tell you

The plain-language summary: almost everyone has a similar order of magnitude of eccrine glands, roughly two to four million, and the number is largely fixed by early childhood. What differs from person to person is not usually a dramatically different gland count but how strongly and where those glands are activated. Having a high gland density on the palms is normal anatomy shared by everyone; excessive sweating is about gland output and nervous-system signaling, not about having extra glands.
