Why an overactive thyroid causes sweating
Thyroid hormone raises the body's metabolic rate and heat production, but the sweating and heat intolerance of hyperthyroidism are attributed mainly to enhanced sensitivity to adrenergic (catecholamine) signaling. As the Merck Manual states, "many common symptoms of hyperthyroidism are due to enhanced sensitivity to adrenergic hormones, such as nervousness, palpitations, hyperactivity, increased sweating, heat hypersensitivity" and others. This is also why beta-blockers can ease several of these symptoms, including sweating and tremor, without treating the thyroid itself.
Because the sweating here is a downstream effect of a systemic condition, it is classified as secondary generalized hyperhidrosis, typically affecting the whole body rather than being confined to the palms, soles or underarms, and often accompanied by other features such as weight loss, palpitations, tremor and anxiety.
Graves' disease and how common these symptoms are
Graves' disease, an autoimmune condition, is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism, responsible for roughly 60–80% of cases and the leading cause in iodine-sufficient regions. Hyperthyroidism itself affects about 1.2% of the US population; a large review reported overt hyperthyroidism prevalence around 0.5% in the USA and 0.5–0.8% in Europe.
Heat intolerance and sweating rank among the most frequently reported symptoms. In a single-center series of 47 children and adolescents with Graves' disease, 76.6% reported heat intolerance and 74.5% reported excessive sweating, the two most common presenting complaints, ahead of palpitations (68.1%) and tremors (48.9%). These figures come from a pediatric cohort in India and should be read as illustrative of how prominent these symptoms can be, not as a universal adult rate.

Symptoms are less obvious in older adults
The intensity and number of hyperthyroid symptoms decline with age. A large cross-sectional study of 3,049 people with hyperthyroidism found that older patients presented with a paucity of symptoms and signs compared with younger patients, the basis for the term "apathetic thyrotoxicosis." In practice this means an older adult with an overactive thyroid may sweat or feel hot far less noticeably than a younger person, which can make the condition easy to miss. That is one reason unexplained sweating changes are best evaluated rather than dismissed.
What this means in plain terms
Feeling hot and sweating more than usual are among the classic, common features of an overactive thyroid, but on their own they are non-specific, because heat and sweating have many causes. What raises the suspicion of a thyroid cause is the company they keep: unintended weight loss, a fast or pounding heartbeat, tremor, anxiety or difficulty sleeping alongside the sweating. Hyperthyroidism is diagnosed with a simple blood test and is treatable, so anyone with this cluster of symptoms, or with generalized sweating that is new, worsening or disrupting daily life, should see a clinician.
