Why hyperhidrosis reaches into working life

Primary focal hyperhidrosis most often affects the palms, soles, underarms, and face, the exact surfaces used for handshakes, keyboards, tools, paperwork, and presentations. This was a clinic-based sample of people who sought care, so figures may run higher than in the general population of people with milder sweating.

The productivity is lost on the job, not by missing work

A recurring theme in the economic literature is that hyperhidrosis costs productivity mainly through presenteeism, the decline in on-the-job performance while still present, rather than absenteeism, taking days off. A cost-of-illness study in Japan used the validated Work Productivity and Activity Impairment questionnaire in working patients with axillary hyperhidrosis and found absenteeism of just 0.49% but presenteeism of about 30%, meaning roughly a 30% reduction in work performance attributed to symptoms (Murota et al., 2021).
