What Is Shoe Occlusion and How Does It Affect Foot Sweat?
Shoe occlusion is the covering and sealing of the foot inside a shoe, which slows the evaporation of sweat, traps warmth, and raises humidity around the skin. It is the reason ordinary foot sweat becomes noticeable inside footwear: the same eccrine glands would go largely unnoticed on an open, ventilated foot.

What shoe occlusion means
In skin science, occlusion means a barrier over the skin that prevents water vapor from leaving freely. Any covering that stays flush against the surface (a bandage, a glove, a shoe) creates a degree of occlusion. A shoe is a particularly effective occluder because it wraps the foot on all sides, sits close to the skin over most of that area, and is worn for hours at a time.
The result is a small, enclosed microclimate around the foot: warmer than the outside air, more humid, and slow to change. It is that microclimate, more than any single feature of the shoe, that turns ordinary foot sweat into a dampness problem.
How occlusion changes foot sweat
Foot sweat that would evaporate quickly on an open foot has almost nowhere to go under occlusion. Water vapor rises into the shoe, saturates the air inside, and either condenses back onto the skin and sock or is slowly released through whatever venting the upper allows. Meanwhile the trapped warmth keeps the sole's eccrine glands producing at a steady rate, because the local environment stays comfortable to them.
That is why the same feet feel dry when bare on a cool floor and damp inside a shoe within an hour, without any change in how much they are sweating. The sweating is roughly constant; the evaporation is not.
Why occlusion matters for odor and skin
Occlusion is also central to the odor half of the foot-sweat story. The warm, humid microclimate favors the bacteria and fungi that turn sweat and softened skin cells into stronger-smelling compounds. Between the toes, where two areas of skin press together under a shoe, occlusion is at its most intense and skin can macerate: soften, whiten, and eventually break down.
The same principle explains why airing shoes between wears, and choosing open footwear on days when it is practical, tend to change how feet feel and smell without changing how much they sweat. What is different is the degree of occlusion, and therefore the humidity of the microclimate.

Is shoe occlusion the same as poor ventilation?
They overlap but are not identical. Ventilation is about airflow through the shoe; occlusion is about how closely the shoe covers and seals the skin. A shoe can be tight to the foot (highly occlusive) even in a breathable material, because the material itself is still pressed against the skin.
Does breathable footwear remove occlusion?
Not entirely. Breathable uppers let more water vapor escape, so the microclimate is less humid than in a sealed shoe. But the sole still sits against a nonporous insole and the foot is still covered, so a significant amount of occlusion remains.
Is occlusion always bad?
No. Occlusion is simply a description of what a covering does to the skin. It protects and cushions the foot as well as trapping moisture. For sweaty feet the relevant point is that occlusion is unavoidable in ordinary shoes, and it explains a lot of why foot sweat behaves the way it does.
